"Ling xiu" originally means collar and cuff of clothes. For they are directly frictwith skin, so, in ancient time people made them by special materials and sometimesthey decorated the edge with gold as they are easily damaged. Later, people call thesupreme leader in a team ling xiu. From this we can see that, in ancients’ opinioncollar plays an important role in clothing.Until today, collar still is the point of focus when people choosing clothes andcollar is also the most changeble part of clothes, therefore, we should master theprocedures of collar structure design, and be clear about the relationship betweenclothing design and structure parameter of collar.Clothing are typical perceptual products,on which every detail and line arelimited by the designer’s aesthetic experience. Due to the differences show upbetween designers’ expressions and customers’ requirements, it is very meaningfuland necessary to research how to connect customers’ sensible feelings and clothingform together. The original intention of this research just match with productsemiotics, and in recent years, product semiotics has been efficiently used in manyfields.This topic research on clothing collar by the method of product semiotics, and tryto construct the relationship between shape elements of suit collars and the collarperceptual evaluation. The main research consists five parts:First, reading a lot of literature materials, make clear of the present researchsituation of suit collar, study the related theory and method, meanwhile, make clearof their application in other areas in order to supply necessary support for thesignificance and feasibility of this topic.Second, study the development of suit collar, through historical data to explorethe influence to collars caused by costume function and people’s aesthetic demandunder a certain historical background. Then analysis different collars in suit ofdifferent types, through all the above work to form a suit collar shape elements table. Third, gathering perceptual words related with suit by using the perceptualsemantic method to form suit collar’s semantic space.Fourth, based on the above collar shape elements table and the collar semanticspace to design the experiment of ’relationship between collar shape and collarsemanteme’, through the analysis of the data in spss17.0to get the relationshipbetween the two, and to a establish a kind of method for suit collar structure design.Fifth, try to using the method in suit collar structure design, and based on theresult to analysis the advantages and disadvantages of this methods.
