The Study On The Thought Of Saving The Nation By Engaging InIndustry During May4th Movement

The thought of saving the nation through industry during the May FourthMovement period is a political trend of patriotism thought that intelligentsiaof the bourgeoisie and petty bourgeoisie of that time trying to imitate westerncapitalism development model, invigorate national industry, establishindependent economic system of capitalism to save the nation from deep crisis.Its famous representatives are Zhang Qian, Sun Zhongshan, Zhou Xuexi etc.In this paper, studies on the thought of saving the nation through industryduring the period of the May Fourth Movement are mainly shown as follows:Firstly, it summarizes the basic propositions of the thought of saving the nationthrough industry during the May Fourth Movement period. On the basis of variousarguments of the thought of saving the nation through industry during the period ofthe May Fourth Movement, it generalizes six basic theories which are the theory offounding the nation by commerce, the theory of saving the nation by industry, thetheory of building the nation by agriculture, the theory of establishing the nation byindustry education, the theory of setting up the nation by transportation, and thetheory of saving the nation by financing etc.Secondly, it explores reasons for the formation of the thought of savingthe nation through science during the May Fourth Movement period, revealingsocial unrest as its social context, national capitalism development as itseconomic condition, national bourgeoisie’s expanding as its class basis,spreading of various western progressive thoughts as its theory basis, industrytheory of saving the nation as its historical origin, the situation of modernwestern capitalism of strengthening the nation by relying on industry as itsexternal conditionsThirdly, it evaluates the historical status of the thought of saving thenation through industry during the May Fourth Movement period. It isconsidered that the thought promotes the salvation movement with strongpatriotism, advances the development of national capitalism with modernoperation and management thought, improves the progress of China modernization with strong thought of opening to the outside world, propels thedevelopment of science and education with the interaction of industry andscience and education, leads to an inevitable failure with grumous reformism.Fourthly, it manifests the realistic enlightenments of the thought ofsaving the nation through industry during the period of the May FourthMovement. We should adhere to the scientific theory as guidance thoughtwithout abandoning, persist in economic construction as the core withoutshaking, uphold the opening-up as a basic state policy without nonfeasance, insiston people’s well-being as value orientation without hesitation, and persevere inprospering the nation by science and education as development strategy withouteasing.
