In current business world, the competition is more and more intensive, under theglobalization background retailing company can’t compete seperately any more, only if itresponses to consumers’ demand promptly, can it form its core competitive power. Inventorymanagement is always one of the difficult problems for retailing company, so it is more andmore important. Now inventory management is becoming the key point of supply chainmanagement from the original only one methodology to reduce inventory level, now it isdeveloped into one management science branch includes a series techniques, specificknowledge, skills, methodologies, and is one important way to increase the competitivity ofthe whole supply chain of chain supermarket. VMI is one scientific tool, which aims toachieve the lowest cost for both consumer and supplier, under one joint agreement, withsupplier to manage the inventory, to reduce the inventory level. It is proved to be oneadvanced supply chain inventory management model, which can reduce the time in advance,improve service level, reduce lacking of goods, decrease the cost, increase the accuracy ofdemand forcast, increase inventory recycle ratio.In this paper, the definition, class, effect of inventory, and the concept, researchingcontent, and objective of inventory management is firstly introduced, and then the model ofinventory management in the supply chain is studied, and the traditional inventorymanagement model is analyzed in detail, the developing history and research status oninventory management methodology and theory is reviewed, the characteristic, basic thought,advantages and disadvantages, form, and execution steps of three inventoy managementmodel including VMI, JMI, and CPFR is compared and summarized. Based on that, the actualoperating status of one branch shop of C supermarket company is studied, the problems andcauses in the inventory management of it is analyzed from three aspects, the analysis on theinventory status of this branch shop is quantified.At last, the operating status of C supermarket after incorporating VMI inventorymanagement methodology and ABC system is introduced, based on the causes of theinventory forming of C supermarket, improved the inventory management level effectivelyfrom inventory control method, inventory management method, and forcast method, etc. parts,respectively, optimized the inventory management systematically. Another, some improvingsuggestions on the limitations of inventory management, merit assessment system, and riskassessment measures of C supermarket is proposed based on the improving measures.
