Nowadays with the severity of global energy consumption increasing, the new concept green economy has been ever raised, and becomes a new hot research topic. Under such environment, lots of new concepts like smart power grids, advanced metering system, smart building are developed. At same time, the power consumption of information industry which set the base of modern technology increases, and becomes the bottleneck of information industry development instead of communication capacity. All of this makes energy efficient communication a hot topic.With the number of EPON or FTTx equipment increasing, Power consumption of Access network, which take most part of communication energy, has got a lot attention. Current research is focusing on putting some access network subnet or equipment into sleep mode based on load situation, but due to reasons there is still static power consumption even when equipment is sleeping and low adjustment rate of clients’action, this mechanism is still under research.This paper proposes a parent-child equipment controlling mechanism (P-CECM) based on advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) to reduce power consumption. It is to divide equipment into two part, parent and. child, according to power consumption relationship, and state of parent turns when power consumption information of child changes. When P-CECM is introduced to the access network, this paper makes a lot improvement based access network characteristics, and proposes smart parent-child power efficient mechanism (SP-CPEM), including a) introduce power and load prediction module and adjust clients’status based the tendency of power prediction to increase the adjustment rate, b) introduce WDS mode to gather the lower traffic of clients communities, and shut down useless equipment to raise the equipment’s availability.In order to test the power save rate, this paper implements an EPON system to simulate a mini access network, and make a test. Based the results, this paper found using SP-CPEM, power consumption has decreased by37%comparing to normal access network.In order to evaluate the practicality of advanced metering infrastructure under large scale usage, this paper implement a simulator and do high-load test under ideal, educational, public network separately, and finally proposes improvement solution based results.
