As Internet traffic increases due to increasing numbers of internet users and higher bandwidth services, energy consumption of transmission and switching equipment required to route this traffic must also grow. Research on energy efficient networks has caused more and more interest. Optical network has high channel capacity and low energy consumption, using optical technology can largely decrease the energy consumption of network.In CDN (Content Delivery Networks) networks, a large number of contents need to be transmitted over long distances, which brings in lots of energy consumptions. Compared to electrical transmission, optical fiber has much broader bandwidth, lower transmission loss and stronger capacity of resisting disturbance because of its own physical characteristics. So, using optical fiber in VOD networks could decreases energy consumptions.In this paper, we examine energy consumptions of distributed optical communication network which supports video on demand services and the corresponding energy saving technologies. It mainly includes the following topics:1. Research on constructure of distributed optical communication network, source of energy consumption and potential energy saving technologies. This paper examines all the implementing technologies of core network, metro network and access network.2. This paper examines energy consumption model of distributed optical communication network which supports video on demand service, and proposes a new transportation mechanism of video, and then do some simulations. Simulation results show that the transmission mechanism this paper proposed could decrease transmission energy consumption and request blocking rate, especially in networks which have many domains and strong connectivity degree while few optical wavelengths.3. Based on experiment platform, this paper designs and implements the controling signalling of content delivery network, which are energy efficient.
