The Internet traffic increased tremendously in the first decade of the21st century. With the popularity of the Internet, the world has never been so closely linked as nowadays. The market demand for optical fiber communication, which is the principal means of data transmission in backbone network, has been expanded therefore. On one hand, remote data service such as overseas calls requires a growth in the capability of long-haul transmission; On the other hand, optical network plays an important role in the process of tri-networks integration, networking is another development trend of optical fiber communication. Either long-haul transmission or optical networking proposes higher demand for experimental research of optical fiber communication. Therefore, a low-cost, high-efficiency means to perform complex optical transmission experiments is urgently needed and the circulating loop transmission platform is a perfect solution.Circulating loop transmission platform is the kind of optical fiber transmission platform applying circulating loop techniques. It can simulate the long-haul optical fiber transmission by controlling the optical signal transmit in and out a optical fiber loop; In the area of optical network research, optical devices can be placed in the loop and let optical signal go through them for multiple times, in that way the cascading effect of the devices can be tested. Due to the particularity of circulating loop transmission, special consideration for controlling technique is required during the development of circulating loop transmission platform. The main content of this paper is the key techniques to develop the circulating loop transmission platform and the transmission experiment performed on the platform. The first chapter of the paper introduces the research background and current research status of circulating loop transmission platform. The second chapter describes circulating loop transmission principle, focusing on the work process and key techniques of circulating loop transmission. The third chapter focuses on the design and development of the loop control system. The forth chapter is a core part of the paper, the process of the development of the circulating loop transmission platform and the transmission experiment performed on the platform are described. The experiment verified the feasibility and the validity of the transmission platform. In the last part, the paper summarized all the work carried out, evaluated the performance of the circulating loop transmission platform developed and showed a prospect of the work.
