The development of the internet of things is still in the primary stage. It faces an urgent problem that different standards are not unified and different system can’t be interoperable. There are a variety of data exchange standards for the application layer of the internet of things, which are not compatible with each other. It blocks internet of things’ interconnection and intercommunication. So it has become an important concern at home and abroad that how to make the data exchange standards compatible with each other and achieve information sharing and interoperability between different systems in different areas. The research institutions of EU actively research "fusion" of data exchange standards, and China also actively expands the research on this issue.The paper is a part of National Natural Science Foundation named "The research of open and semantics interoperability framework of internet of things". During the research, firstly, we read and learn many mature application cases of internet of things. Then, the article researches and analyzes primary information resources of the internet of things from these cases. We abstract the common properties of the information resources in the internet of things by classification and summary. Then we choose typical and mature international data exchange standards and extract their common characteristics. Based on the above research and analysis, we combined theoretical knowledge of metadata and XML language to bring up internet of things information the metadata model, abbreviated as IOTIMM.Secondly, we put forward and define internet of things interoperability protocol, abbreviated as IOTIP based on IOTIMM of this paper, including the establishment of the elements corresponding table, range and data type conversion rules and the elimination of the elements of application frequency difference algorithm. It is used to solve a variety of metadata format parsing and conversion issues between different data exchange standards.Finally, the paper design and develop a smart object tracking system with RFID technology and J2EE Web technology, which uses Physical Markup Language to describe data. The existing smart work system uses Common Alerting Protocol to describe data. Then we provide a theoretical verification of IOTIP based on these two systems. In this way, we confirm that it can realize the interoperability between different systems of internet of things based on IOTIP, and achieve the purpose of sharing and making full use of the resource and information of internet of things. In addition, we summarize the content of the paper and make the forecast of standards harmonization and standardization and advanced technology resolving interoperability issues in internet of things.
