Chinese calligraphy is unique to China for a traditional art form, based on Chinese characters. As a unique art form, Chinese calligraphy played a key media part in ancient China. With the swift development of media in the twentieth century, especially the appearance of the network, the existence and development of Chinese characters is confronted with rigorous challenge. Has Chinese calligraphy, based on Chinese characters, suffered from neglection? Both the ancient people and modern people use the same tool to write Chinese calligraphy, why are there enormous differences between ancient China and modern world. It is not related to Chinese calligraphy itself, but to society and culture. The study deals with the communication of Chinese calligraphy in media theories’ view, based on only small works.Specifically, this thesis is divided into five sections. The first section looks back at Chinese calligraphy, as a kind of communication phenomenon, which played a key media part in ancient China. However, Chinese calligraphy encounters unprecedented challenges in the modern world. Chinese calligraphy is a very attractive and valuable subject to study in communication view. Also the research frame, the significance and innovation of this thesis are illustrated.The second section focus on communication of Chinese calligraphy concerning Mcluhan’s media theories, among of which the key point is the theory of media hot and cold. Through reading original work, relevant books and papers, the writer find there are some consistent misunderstandings hidden behind the scholars’ unanimous negative attitudes. From a new perspective, the doubts are solved and new standards are discovered.Section three and section four are the key parts of this thesis. The third section analyses the communication system of Chinese calligraphy in media view and propose the conception of cold calligraphy and hot calligraphy. Also, the write discusses three reversions during the history evolution of Chinese calligraphy. While the main emphasis of the research has shifted to modern times in the next section. It discusses that visual environment has a major influence on our perception, which will have a direct impact on Chinese calligraphy art. It is a profound and far reaching significance for raising these questions. Finally, the thesis arrives at the conclusion that it is important to recognize and use media. In the last section, this thesis is trying to go much deeper:It is reasonable that there will be change in Chinese calligraphy from the standpoint of media, popular culture and aesthetics. The deficiency of the study is also presented in this part of the article.
