Since reform and opening-up, China has experienced a prodigious expansion of economic strength, political power and military force. During several decades, the country showed his powerful influence to the whole world. Under the spotlight of the international stage, China is confronted with a practical problem, that is to say national image, which becomes particularly significant against the background of globalization. In order to lower the impact on news reports brought by ideology and national interests, we decided to research on French newspaper. This paper starts from the analysis of the reports on Diaoyu Island published on Le Monde, second largest French newspapers, by interpreting the language and expression used in the reports and comments. We are going to observe three points of this theme:If French media agree that Diaoyu Island is a part of China? How do French Media think of Chinese people, and the relation between China and Japan.By analyzing the articles and reports of Le Monde, we will get the image of China written by French Media, it shows concretely as follows:firstly, French media judges the peaceful rise of China to be irrational. Secondly, French media has an autocratic stereotype about China. Thirdly, French media considers Chinese people as a calm nation. Referring to the above-mentioned points of the image of China, the author summarized three targets of shaping the national image:an image of democratic government, an image of peaceful and friendly diplomacy, and an image of rational people. In addition to exposit a complete national image of China, the study will also provide several proposals to improve our national image. For example:reinforce the image of government official, raise the openness and transparence of government information, and strengthen the national cohesion.
