As one of the oldest types of dam, concrete gravity dam is applied in wild-range because it is simple, adaptable and easy to solve the permanent flood. With the development of computer-aided design technology, computer aided design of gravity dam has become the inevitable trend. But until now, it is hard to find a computer aided system to complete the design of gravity dam. To meet the needs of digitalization and visualization, this article attempts to establish a design system of gravity dam for shape optimal design and3D modeling.Using VB6.0As the programming language, this system is established by the secondary development of AutoCAD and ArcGIS Engine, including two main modules—the section design module and3D modeling module.Here are features as follows.The section design module will realize the following functions:(1) Calculating the height and hydraulic characteristics of non-flow gravity dam.(2) Searching for the optimal sections in six cases of both non-flow and flow gravity dam automatically.(3) Checking the strength and stability of any section in six cases of both non-flow and flow gravity dam.(4) Checking the flood-carrying capacity of flow gravity dam.(5) Outputing computing results and drawing the dam section automatically.The3D modeling module will realize the following functions:(1) Modifying the two dimensional drawing to prepare for3D solid modeling.(2) Realizing the3D terrain modeling based on ArcGIS Engine.(3) Realizing3D dam modeling base on the method advanced in this paper, which uses2D graphics to reduce the3D model.(4) Establishing the user coordinate system to locate the dam model on the terrain model.(5)Implementing the functions of roaming and query based on ArcScene.There are three innovations in this system.Firstly, it firstly implements the profile optimized design of both non-flow and flow gravity dam based on penalty function method, meeting the needs of economics.Secondly, the method, which uses2D graphics to reduce the3D model, is adopted in the system, making it possible to complete the model of every type of dam quickly.Meanwhile, it chooses ArcScene as the platform to realize the function of roaming, making the models have their own attribute to modify and query, which provides a strong visual basis for comparison and selection of dam designs. Finally, the system established in this paper is used to design a gravity dam from practical engineering. The optimal sections of both non-flow and flow gravity dam are found efficiently. The actual sections are checked as well. At last,3D models are created and the scene roaming of Hydraulic Complex is realized. Example shows that this system is convenient,accurate and practical.
