Because there is not a complete visual and easy-to-use general software for optimum design of profile of gravity dam, nowadays, the old and relatively low efficient design methods are still used .The purpose of this paper is to develop a new software about optimum design of profile of gravity dam, which is easy to learn and to use, and more efficient.The software is developed on the basis of The Design Code For concrete Gravity Dam SL319-2005,using material mechanical method as the calculation methods ,and adopting theory of structure optimization design to establish optimization model .Taken the minimum area of profile of gravity dam as object function, taken the geometric and behavior constraint (including stability constraint and stress constraint) as the constraint condition, taken the Visual Basic 6.0 as the development platform to establish program modules and program code. A software of optimum design of profile of gravity dam will be developed according to the method of software project.This software has three functions. Firstly, it can calculate the height of the dam and the result of wave elements. Secondly, it achieves optimum design of profile of gravity dam under 4 dependent working conditions and the combined condition, There are normal water level condition ,designed flood level working condition, flood level in checking working condition and earthquake working condition, and the condition meets the demands of four conditions above mentioned . After user input the necessary parameters, the software will design best sectional area, namely, the smallest sectional area. Meanwhile, it shows us it's outline drawing. Thirdly, in order to make it wildly applied in the future , the checking calculation function is added under four working conditions. With the given parameters, software begin to check the profile of stability and stress condition .The software that bases on Visual Basic 6.0 development platform has friendly interface and is very universal, Besides, it operate easily,design reasonable and calculate accurately. Because it not only reduce the designer's workload and accelerate the optimization process but also it working as a effective tool for the dam profile design makes the operation more vivacity, easier and user-friendly, it has high practical value for optimum design of profile of gravity dam.
