The future development of communication technology will be miniaturized,integrated all-optical communication, Erbium-ytterbium co-doped waveguideamplifier (EYDWA) with its small size, high gain, ease of integration and many otheradvantages will play a key role in optical fiber communication systems.In this paper, Er3+/Yb3+Co-doped bismuth borate glasses was prepared by hightemperature melting method. The absorption spectrum of the sample is calculated andanalyzed by light-emitting theory of rare earth ions and J-O theory. Some relatedparameters of the sample such as the Ωλ(λ=2,4,6) parameters,spectra strengh ofdipole transition, absorption cross-section are obtained by fitting the experimentaldata. It should be avoided to count in the absorption peak of Yb3+when choosing thefitting-peaks, Otherwise it will result distortion. Besides, the full width halfmaximum(FWHM) of the emission spectrum and the emission cross-sectionalσesare calculated by the McCumber theory. Then we use Thermal Ion Exchange processto prepare the planar waveguide, and test to determinate the effective refractive indexof the waveguide for several modes. Finally, the emission spectra of the samplesbefore and after ion exchange were compared and analyzed.
