With the popularity of big data and cloud computing, the rapid increase in the amount of information has put forward higher requirements for the transmission capacity of the optical fiber communication system. At present, transmission bandwidth is mainly limited in C+L band by the transmission bandwidth of Er3+.In order to expand the bandwidth that is not fully utilized, the fiber amplifier chopped with Yb3+,Nd3+,Tm3+ and other rare earth ions and Raman fiber amplifier were studied. However, there is still no effective broadband optical fiber amplifier covering O-,E-,S-,C-and L-band at the same time.Recently, bismuth doped glass and bismuth doped fiber is reported with about 500 nm ultra broadband luminescence centered around 1.3 ?m.In particular,bismuth/erbium co-doped fiber has ultra wideband fluorescence from 1000nm to 1570nm,which provides a very promising active material for the development of ultra wide band fiber amplifier and ultra wide band tunable fiber laser. In this paper,we mainly study the luminescence and gain characteristics of bismuth/erbium co-doped fiber, the main work includes:1.Fluorescence properties of a novel type of bismuth/erbium co-doped optical fiber(BEDF)were investigated under 980nm and 830nm semiconductor lasers pumping, and the effect of pump power and wavelength, pump configuration, fiber length, temperature on the fluorescence properties were systematically analyzed.Experimental results show that the fluorescence intensity is significantly enhanced with increasing the pumping power. With the increment of fiber length, luminescence intensity firstly increases and then decreases under pumping forward. When pumping backward, luminescence intensity firstly increases and then remaines stable. In the temperature range of 25?80?,the fluorescence intensity of bismuth/erbium co-doped optical fiber is almost unaffected by the temperature.2.Bismuth/erbium co-doped optical fiber was excited by 980nm and 830nm semiconductor lasers simultaneously and separately. After comparing and analyzing the luminescence spectra of the above two cases,it is proved that the bismuth active centers are relatively independent, but there is some overlap in the luminescence range.3.The gain characteristics of BEDF at 1310nm and 1550nm band were studied experimentally by using 830nm laser and 980nm laser to pump bismuth/erbium co-doped optical fiber with forward and backward configuration, respectively. It is found that the gain is enhanced with increasing the pumping power, and the gain at 1310nm band is significantly higher than the 1550nm band.
