With the communication globalization and the increasing service requirements, it hasbeen a trend to use IP technology in the networks. Most of the bearing ways of the currentmobile backhaul transport networks is TDM (Time Division Multiplexing)/SDH(Synchronous Digital Hierarchy).With the developments of the3G(3rdGeneration)and theLTE(Long Term Evolution), there is a growing number of the requirements of the bearingservice category and the volume of the data service, and the traditional bearing network can’tmeet the demands of the multi-service and the high bandwidth. The infrastructure of IP RAN(Internet Protocol Radio Access Network) is based on routers, which adopts the flexibleIP technology, the strengthened OAM(Operation Administration and Maintenance)mechanism, the clock transmission and the business protection mechanism. What’s more, itcan also support multi-service and a large number of data services with the lavish forwardingfunctions to the second and third layers. Therefore, the IP RAN can meet the demands of thedevelopment of full service, and it is the most effective way to use the IP technology inpacket transport platform to solve the problem of the current transport network. IP RANtechnology is a conclusive solution to bearing network for those operators, which canfacilitate the reduction of the workload of the maintenance and configuration, and realize thesmooth evolution of the LTE.In this paper, the IP RAN technology is investigated in depth, including the analyses ofthe key technologies and their properties, the comparison of the IP RAN technology to otherbearing technologies, etc. The main access ways between the base station and the basestation controller are elaborated in detail, which lays the theoretical foundation of thetransport network construction. The paper focuses on the planning and the designing of theIP-RAN-technology-based bearing network for integrated service in a city which is proposedby China Unicom, the IP RAN based networking tactics and technology deployments areelaborated. The transport network based on IP RAN technology that meets the service requirements for the3G times was constructed, and the networking engineering tests in thestand-alone performance of the router, the functions of the Ethernet and the voice service,the network management, the Ethernet interface and the network optimization wereperformed. The reliability and the expandability of the IP RAN based networking areverified by all of the qualified tested results and the stable operating of every localnetworking, which indicates that the IP RAN networking technology can meet the demandsof evolution and improvement of the future bearing network.
