The applications of internet of things (IoT), based on the ability of recognizing intelligent items with RFID technology as its core technology, promote the developments of business applications. The diversity of business applications raises higher requirements on expansibility, applicability and flexibility of traditional RFID applications, boosting a rapid development of various kinds of RFID middleware. RFID middleware is compatible with underlying readers, and provide read-time, effective information about object events. The business process of enterprise can be equipped with abilities of real-time monitoring on producing, serving and object using when it is integrated with RFID applications, leading to efficiency improvement of enterprise.Cloud services provide users with a platform of resources integration. The IoT applications based on cloud services reduce development costs for SMEs, becoming the main platform of promotion of future IoT applications. However, the current RFID middleware is mostly concerned about underlying hardware and extract business events of interest patterns using complex event processing technology. It is usually designed and developed for special applications, lacking of common standards and effective mechanisms to build business processes to help enterprise develop IoT applications based on cloud services.To address this issue, this paper research and design a process customization-oriented RFID cloud services middleware, aim to provide a middleware platform for enterprise users, who can use common standard and mechanism to build a RFID business process based on cloud services, and be satisfied to dynamically deploy the business process of enterprise integrated with RFID applications, develop and apply the IoT applications based on cloud services.Based on this motive, this paper primarily makes a research and brief statement of IoT, RFID technology and background of cloud services, describe the architecture and functions of current middleware products, analyze their advantages and shortcomings to be a RFID cloud service middleware. Then we analyzes the level architecture and requirements of RFID middleware based on cloud services, explains that it is based on compatibility with underlying readers and complex event processing technology as original middleware and also have the functionality to customize the business processes that carry RFID applications. Under the architecture and requirements mentioned above, we describe the key technologies and modular design, including the RFID standard service as the logic unit of IoT applications based on cloud service, service flow model corresponding to enterprise’s workflow with RFID standard service as process node, and SPDL (Serviceflow Process Definition Language) with its parser and validator. At last we implements prototype system, and test it in the tobacco logistic industry on SPDL and middleware functions.
