With the rapid increase of network bandwidth requirements and the rapid development of multimedia communication technology, it is necessary to exert higher demands for the Router which plays an important role for the network transmission. Forwarding processing technology is the most important part of the influence of network performance, meanwhile, Forwarding performance is also the most crucial characteristics of high-end router. So, all network equipment manufacturers take Fast-forwarding as the focus of research and implementation. This thesis researches a new Network Processor Chip on the basis of the existing hardware and software platform. Major work are as follows:1. IPV4 Unicast and Multicast message Transmission based on Network Processor Chip are realized by Microcode, and Unicast realizes the checksum of message and the detection of message version, meanwhile, it also realizes many other operations such as the replacement of source address and destination address, TTL(Time To Live) amendment, Re-calculating checksum, modifying TAG and so on.2. The reverse detection function of message and Load balancing function are realized, which can make messages transmit by sending control command according to different business needs. Moreover, Mixed forwarding function with Switching chips is also realized by adding special exchange information and message forwarding can achieve Line-speed by testing functional requirements.3. IPV4 Multicast message multi-port and multi-transmission function based on Network Processor Chip is realized by using two message copy method provided by chips, which can make messages transmit by sending control command according to different business needs and Mixed forwarding function with Switching chips is also realized.4.Unicast Transmission will achieve Line-speed by analyzing the table structure and optimized microcode instruction provided by chips.The functions mentioned above is all realized by Microcode provided by chips. Through testing the function and performance of the chip, the results indicate that this chip performance can meet requirements for utilization and can be applied to practical equipment finally.
