The novel strategy named ‘new countryside, new electric power, and new service’ wasproposed by the State Grid. It was employed to prompt the construction of smart grid andcoordinate the development of grids of all levels. In the process of upgrading, the integratedmonitor system of bench transformer rural power grid will play a strictly utilitarian role.This paper investigates the communication methods for such system in a certain areaFirstly, the relative merits were compared between a large variety of communicationapproach in electrical power system, studying the demand by the automation of distributionnetwork in rural area. Then, the network structure and communication principles of GPRSare described, and the feasibility of the application of GPRS in the automation system ofrural distribution network is analyzed comprehensively. The communication plan for benchterminals in rural grid is proposed based on such analysis. This plan employed the starnetwork. The remote management center uses the special-purpose communication link toaccess to the Internet. Meanwhile, the terminals can log in the GPRS network to derive thedynamic IP address and require the information center to construct data channel.Secondly, the protocol in transmission layer is defined by comparing the merits of UDPand TCP. Besides, the communication protocol is designed, and the structure table andfunction table are composed.Finally, the hardware and software design is presented for the communication module.The hardware includes the power managements, the interface circuits of the SIM card, thenetwork identity circuits and test/reset circuits. The software includes the building blockdesign, including the initialization, interlink, management, data transmission and dataencapsulation modules. After the debug between software and hardware, the results showthat the communication plan in this paper can meet the requirements of integrated monitorsystem for bench transformer in rural grid. The feasibility, validity and utility are testified.
