With the rapid development of information technology and computer industry, embedded internet system has become a watchful focus in IT industry in recent years. As the embedded technology develops and the cost for this system lowers, the network video monitoring system based on the embedded mode has become a new hot topic. This thesis aims at developing a kind of remote video monitoring system which is used for observing the operation of school network laboratory’s actual physical devices. With the advantages of small size, low power consumption, digitization, low price and convenient connection with network, ARM9software board existing in school has been chosen as a developmental platform in this system design. In this platform, transplanting embedded Linux operation system and using ordinary USB port as a video capture device, collected video data has been compressed with MPEG-4algorithm and has stored in an external IDE hard drive and then transmitted through the network. Remote clients can send visiting applications using the browser in order to achieve video monitoring towards remote environments in local area network or even Internet web. This thesis mainly focuses on the whole development of embedded system, and studies on the whole developmental processes of video monitoring system in detail. It firstly gives a simple introduction of the video monitoring technology and the relative basic theory. Then it points out that the overall design scheme of the embedded system is confirmed by the demands analysis, including electrotype of hardware, selection of several key technologies for this video monitoring system. An embedded Linux operating system is transplanted in the ARM9developing board to set up an embedded application terminal with USB camera drive loading down into the embedded Linux kernel to gather videos through Function V4L API, achieving video data compression with software based on xvid model and fulfilling video storage on IDE hard drive in order to attain video playback. Thus building an embedded web server, streaming media programming with JRTPLIB database, and allowing the network communication and in the end gives them a test which shows that this system design basically finished the expected aims is able to realize video monitoring of remote environments in LAN or even internet.
