In recent years, with the rapid development of wireless communication technology, embedded computing technology, MEMS, and system on chip technology, people pay much more attention to the wireless sensor networks(Wireless Sensor Networks,WSN) which has the ability of perception, computing and communication. Due to the limited energy of sensor nodes of wireless sensor networks, an important goal of WSN is to reduce the energy consume of the nodes and prolong the lifetime of the network. The wireless communication module is the most important part of the energy consumption in the sensor network, and clustering routing protocol is an important effective measure to reduce energy consumption in the wireless communication module. The LEACH Protocol that the first clustering routing protocol to be proposed in the history has an important place of the development of the routing protocol. Many other routing protocols evolved from LEACH, so it has high value to be researched. This article studies the clustering routing protocol LEACH algorithm, and thoroughly analysis of its advantages and weaknesses. It aimed to reduce the energy consumption of the network and prolong the lifetime of the network. Because of LEACH does not consider the time between cluster-head selected and cluster-head selection does not consider the remain energy and the position of the nodes impact on the performance, the improved protocol considered the effect of the time between cluster-head selected to the lifetime of WSN. Threshold determination considering the distance between the node and the base station, the scale of cluster is small when far from the base station, otherwise the scale of the cluster is large. After the first cluster-head selection and other nodes inform the cluster-head, the secondary cluster-head selection is begin. The nodes which energy is greater than the average energy of all the nodes in the cluster as the candidate cluster heads, then selected nodes from the candidate cluster heads as new cluster-head which has the largest ratio of energy and the distance from node to the cluster center, at last update the cluster-head information. This paper simulates the improved protocol LEACH-DET based on NS2(Simulation Network, Version2) simulation platform, and analysis it compare with LEACH from two aspects that the total energy consumption of the remaining number of nodes and time relationships, as well as the energy consume with the life of networks. The results show that improved protocol can reduce node energy consumption and prolong the lifetime of the network.
