With the rapid development of optical communication technology, domestic carriers have long been the backbone fiber optic, digital, broadband, however the "last mile" access network, known as developmental delay, but because of various circumstances, become a barrier restricted terminal users to enjoy high-speed Internet.Traditional cable-based access networks will eventually be replaced by optical fiber. Passive optical network has relatively low cost in fiber access,it can smooth upgrades.Has been considered quite promising technology in optical access network, and Gigabytes Passive Optical Network (GPON) with its high speed, high efficiency, can provide multiple services bearing with QoS guarantee, telecommunication level network operation maintenance and business management capabilities, has become one of the focus with today’s communications technology. GPON provides1.244and2.488Gbit/s in the downlink and uplink speeds of all standard and high efficiency of transmission characteristics. GPON GEM frame packaging technology unique to any business can be encapsulated and transparent transfer. However, our current research on GPON technology still at an initial stage, the relevant technology is not mature, such as GPON system an important component in the optical network equipment unit (ONU), etc., so the research on these GPON technology still has a need for and urgency.This paper analyzes several features of PON technology, through comparison, summed up the advantages of GPON technology. Next, explain and analyze the principles of GPON, structure and protocol standards. Then studied the GPON terminal equipment ONU, each ONU described specific function modules, and accordingly proposed a hierarchical design ONU, ONU finally made the overall design and selection of major components. The next layer of the ONU side GTC peripheral interface, the network focused on the user control interface and SDRAM interface controller design and simulation to verify the design right. Finally, this work and the conclusion to sum up, while a clear need to improve and expand the future work.
