Design And Implementation Of The WEB Server And SNMP Agent Application Modules For Cable Modem

Cable modem is a modem that is used for computer data transmission via cable television system, linking the user-premise equipment into Internet through cable TV network. With the development of Internet, the functions of cable modem become more and more diversified, and how to efficiently manage a large number of cable modems and their complex network services to make it effective operation and to provide users with a certain level of quality service becomes a problem during design and development.WEB-based network management is easy to operate, intuitive, good-interface. SNMP network management has been standardized, which is of a good compatibility, portability and scalability. However, only one of the methods is generally used for a network device management, mostly using the SNMP, it is lack of flexibility and efficiency. So in this article the WEB and SNMP management method are combined for cable modem network management to provide an efficient, flexible and convenient network device management method for network operators. By placing the WEB server and the SNMP agent inside a cable modem, we can achieve two different remote device management methods for a cable modem. This solution is highly extensive and convenient to develop, which meets the need of efficient and flexible network management for cable modem.Firstly, a brief introduction of telecommunication technology used by cable modem and a brief analysis and comparison of different network management methods is given in this paper. Secondly, the software development platform of cable modem is analysed and the whole framework design of the network management software for cable modem is presented. After that, the design and realization of the WEB server and SNMP agent application software modules for cable modem are given in detail, including the configuration and monitoring of its firewall, gateway and router. In the end, both the two function modules are tested and debugged, and the final test result shows that the presented design and developed module is fuctionally correct, stable and meet the expection of the network management for cable modem equipment.
