Telephone, television and computer network merging in one is the developing trend of communication technology. HFC has become one of the main access methods in China because of its broad-bandwidth, wide-overcast and low-cost. But, as users increasing and more service being provided, HFC network becomes bulky and complex. Cost of operation, administration and maintenance (OAM) increases sharply. The management of HFC network is more and more important. Because Cable Modem is key equipment in HFC network, to find an effective way to control and manage Cable Modem is urgently important. In this thesis, SNMP is undertaken as the protocol to control and manage Cable Modems in respect that SNMP has advantages of simplicity, practicality, little-overhead and strong- extensibility.The author is one of the members of the research project - Cable Modem and Cable Modem Termination System (CMTS). Based on the foundation of having successfully developed Cable Modem, the author has implemented an intact SNMP agent using pSOS real-time operating system as development platform. The SNMP agent, together with the SNMP manager developed by another project member, makes up an intact management system of HFC network. The management system has implemented the five types of basic operations specified in SNMP and has implemented fault management, configuration management, performance management and cost management for Cable Modem.At the beginning of this thesis, the author points out that SNMP is applicable to HFC network based on the analysis to the architecture and the protocol stack of HFC. Then, the author brings forward the agent software's architecture and analyses each software module grounded on the analysis to SNMP and the software architecture of Cable Modem, hi the following part, the thesis discusses the key techniques for the realization of SNMP agent based on the real-time operating system-pSOS. Then, the software's flow chart and approach to extend SNMP agent are given. At the end, the thesis discusses the difference between SNMPv2 and SNMPvl and the method to realize coexistence of both versions is given.
