Now, PROFIBUS is the most popular field bus standard in the world. It realizes thecommunication between controller and actuator in the industrial site and forms acommunication network on the bottom of the industrial production. PROFIBUS has beenwidely used in many countries and many industries. PROFIBUS has been kept more than40percent market share in the terms of Fieldbus. The design of remote monitoring basedon Internet and PROFIBUS is becoming a new developing direction which has the vastdevelopment potential.IPv6is a research hotspot of Internet nowadays. It solved the problem of IPv4address exhaustion and made it possible to realize remote monitoring of PROFIBUS.With the help of the communication capacity of Internet, users can get the status ofPROFIBUS device in real-time without being present. Using this technology, enterprisescan monitor the operation of PROFIBUS remotely, and reduce human resource cost, soas to improve enterprise competitiveness. Therefore, the research on remote monitoringbased on PROFIBUS and IPv6has strong realistic meaning.Based on the analysis of PROFIBUS and Internet, this research proposes a methodto realize the PROFIBUS monitoring, namely using the protocol conversion gateway as abridge to achieve the objective of heterogeneous network connection, eventually, realizithe objective of PROFIBUS monitoring remotely. The protocol conversion gatewayworks in the transport layer of the ISO/OSI reference model. It receives informationfrom a network, and sends it to another network, realizing the communication betweenPROFIBUS and Internet.According to the structure characteristics of the two networks, the author studies amethod of protocol conversion, mainly including the model of protocol conversion, theallocation of PROFIBUS device addresses and data security. On this basis, a hardwareplatform is designed with S3C2440, DM9000, RS485and other chips. According to theprotocol conversion process, the design use Linux operating system and design asoftware systems, including the protocol conversion, data transmission and gatewaycontrol. The gateway has a PROFIBUS DP interface and an Internet interface. It processes the two protocols and the related information separately. The use of thisgateway realizes the integration of PROFIBUS and Internet, without abandoning theexisting PROFIBUS control network.To demonstrate the validity of the study and design, the performance of embeddedgateway and the method of protocol are analyzed and discussed via simulationexperiment. Through experiment, it can be founded that the use of embedded gatewaycan meet requirements of the protocol conversion between PROFIBUS and TCP/IP, thatis the remote monitoring method based on Internet and PROFIBUS is correct andfeasible.
