Joseph Eugene Joe Stieglitz, the famous economist who had won the Noble Prize in2001points that the urbanization of China and the new technological revolution which led byAmerica would be pivotal factors in the future. Moreover, the two factors can affect thecourse of human being in the21st century. Therefore, we can learn that the development ofcity will be the theme of China in this century and with the problem of city image that waitupon it.The time background of multimedia provides a rare opportunity for the construction andcommunication of city image, also a great challenge. How to take the media communicationof city image for the purpose of featuring city character, building city brand and upgradingcity image in the Internet era which leading by high technology and informationization is thecore of the communication of city image in China.Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou go ahead about the communication of city image, andthe western cities as Chengdu, Xi’an, Kunming and Lanzhou have their own characteristicson city image. At the same time, as the young municipality directly under the CentralGovernment, also one center of western cities, Chongqing designs a distinctivecommunication strategy to upgrade city image according to its own characteristics.In order to meet the needs of the development of city image, this thesis selects thecommunication strategy on city image of western cities to study, and especially choosesChongqing as an individual case. In conclusion, this paper puts forward a suggestion on theconstruction and communication of city image to upgrade city image of western cities.This thesis can be divided into four parts. The first one is a introduction of the timebackground of multimedia; the second one is discussion on the image of the city; the third oneis research on the media communication of city image; and the fourth one is study on thecommunication strategy on city image of western cities which led by the case analysis. Finally,according to the comparison among Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chongqing, Chengdu,Xi’an, Kunming and Lanzhou, This thesis presents a whole strategy on the construction andcommunication of western cities’ city image as a summary.
