With the rapid development of mobile networks and technical standards, thedevices supporting for mobile video chat, as well as the advent of multiple mobilevideo chat applications, people’s interest about the real-time video chats runs high. The mobile video chat, which has a growing target group and a unique communicateexperience in the context of rapid development mobile internet, is becoming one ofthe most potential mobile value-added applications. As a new product, both mobilevideo chat application itself and its users have many new features, the traditional userresearch and design methods can not be suited for that. At the same time, Thediversification of users’ communicate context and communication objects making ofusers get more and more. But the experience of existing applications can’t meet theusers’ needs totally; the users’ communication needs a wider space. In this background, the author dedicated to mobile video chat application’s user research and interfacedesign. The research process: firstly, study the mobile video chat and exchange theory toconstruct the communication model of the mobile video chat services’ user, and thendescribed the user-centered design process and basic idea of contextual design. On thenext stage, through quantitative research to understand the present situation of themobile video chat service and the general attitude of the users, analyze the user’semotional needs, and then conduct qualitative research. Based on the results of theresearch, we established three personas, and select one of the most representative oneto design typical scenarios and analysis the persona’s requirements. On the last stage, first based on the results of user research and user’s needs analysis to completeframework design, then conduct prototype testing and iterative design. The process of the research implemented the user-centered design to explore thepotential demand of the users, and verify the methods of user research and interfacedesign through design practice. The research not only provided a system of userresearch and interface design theory for mobile video chat, but also proposed adirection for other video chat services, which can really improve the user experienceof video chat application, then promote the promotion of the video chat service.
