Wireless sensor networks (WSN) integrates varieties of technology including wirelesscommunication technology, sensor technology, distributed computing technology and networkingtechnology. It is a bran-new platform of data acquisition and has a great application future in themilitary, civil area and so on. The biggest weakness of WSN is that it has limited energy andcommunication is the major part of energy consumption, so the design of energy efficient routingprotocol can prolong survival time of the network. This thesis focuses on routing protocols forWSN. The main work is as follows:(1) This thesis introduces the classification of routing protocols, and analyses of LEACHprotocol and EEUC protocol by simulating.(2) An improved-EEUC (I-EEUC) is given in this thesis. The proposed routing protocol usesthe strategy of selecting cluster heads in LEACH to improve uneven clustering routing protocolEEUC in selecting of tentative cluster heads and considers the network energy consumption index, residual energy of the next hop and the number of members in the next hop to establish multi-hopbetween cluster heads. In order to save energy in transferring control information and do not reduceusing efficiency of the network energy, it reconstructs cluster after using each of two datacollections. The simulation results show that the new routing protocol permits the nodes alternatelyserved as the final cluster heed, balances the energy consumption among nodes in the networks andachieves an extension on the networks lifetime effectively.(3) Energy Balanced Clustering (EBC) is given in this thesis. The EBC protocol chooses thecluster head by two elections in the first round, and lets the members of cluster which have thelargest residual energy as the cluster head in the next round. During the establishment of the route, ituses single hop and multi-hop for combination. The simulation results show that EBC lets the deadnodes distribute uniformly in the network, and it lets the first dead node die at latest than LEACHand EEUC.
