Wireless mesh network(WMN) is a new kind of wireless broadband access network, and it bothhas the advantages of Mobile Ad hoc networks and WLAN.WMN is capable of higher reliability, lower interference and higher data throughput. WMN is also dynamically self-organized,self-healed and multi hop in nature. In this paper, firstly, the origin of the Wireless Mesh Network, architecture, standardization, keytechnology and the differences between WMN and other networks are introduced. And this paperalso summarizes the merit, demerit and application of WMN. Then detailed analysis on thefeature and classification of Wireless Mesh Network routing protocols and some routing protocolswhich are widely applied in Wireless Mesh Network are introduced, such as DSDV,DSR, AODVand ZRP are put forward through analysis on their advantages and disadvantages. Most of the traffics come from gateway to mobile mesh clients in hybrid wireless mesh network.Mobility of mesh clients may cause route break frequently. Traditional AODV uses local repairmechanism to get close to destination. If the local repair is failed, an intermediate node generateserror packets and then broadcasts it to gateway. The gateway starts setting up the route path againas long as the error packets reach gateway, which increases the route overhead and end to end delay. At the same time, gateway continuously sends dates, then the number of losing date packets willincrease and the performance of the network will degrade. The improved BM-AODV is proposedto solve these issues. Border mesh router can process error packets on behave of the gateway.Border mesh router stops error packet from retransmitting again between mesh routers that notinvolved in route path and avoids creating storm. And it also buffers data packets from gateway, which increases the throughput of mesh networks. Simulations are worked out through NS2. Andthe results of simulation show that, compared with AODV protocol, BM-AODV protocol achievesa better network performance in the aspect of end to end delay, throughput, packet transport rate, routing overhead in hybrid Wireless Mesh Network.
