In recent years, wireless sensor network technologies have developed rapidly and aroused wide public concern. As one of the core aspects about the performance of wireless sensor networks, energy-saving issue of WSN has become a hot spot of present research. In this dissertation, two aspects relating to energy-saving in wireless sensor networks are studied, which include energy consumption of the nodes, energy aware routing. Also corresponding models and algorithms are presented, and analysis and simulation results show their effectiveness.Firstly, the thesis studies the structure of WSN and the process of WSN standard development. Secondly, the thesis studies the existing routing protocols of the WSN, including the advantages and the disadvantages. Thirdly, we propose a cooperative power-saving technique that applies DVS and DMS to sensor nodes for minimizing energy consumption. It uses a prediction mechanism that estimates the load of the processor and the radio communication device based on the log data to realize proper cooperation. We observed that the adaptation of the proposed technique is able to achieve the energy reduction up to40percent compared to without any energy saving techniques. Fourthly, we propose a new routing algorithm with three different versions, OPA. The algorithm uses load balancing technique and average network energy estimation technique by selecting the paths with maximum normalized energy in each transmission round. Finally, three versions of OPAs are described and simulation results are presented. Simulation results confirm the superior performance of proposed algorithms. The algorithm can maximize network lifetime and the number of packets received by the sink node.
