Frequency Selective Surfaces (FSS) has more than a century history of research and development. There has been much work done both in the industry and academia on developing high-performance FSS. As computer technology develops, the advent of high productivity computing systems makes it possible to analyze complicate FSS structures.Substrate Integrated Waveguide (SIW) has also been recognized as an important and active research area in the academia. SIW has the merits of waveguide and Microstrip. By combining FSS and SIW, this paper presents a few approaches to develop novel and improved FSS.This paper presents a novel approach to develop novel FSS structures based on SIW technique. The approach is based on effective research methods and the commercial analytical software HFSS is used to efficiently combine the traditional FSS design and SIW technique. With context of many the FSS related research topics, the development condition worldwide in mind and some basic physical characteristics in mind, methods to analysis FSS are summarized. In addition, considering the development condition of SIW technique, the cavities of traditional FSS and SIW are combined and a novel FSS is achieved. Based on this hypothesis, attempts are made to combine patch square ring and SIW, which has high performance FSS with two transmission zero responses. And combined Complimentary Split Resonant Ring(CSRR) with SIW technology,a novel aperture FSS are achieved. CSRR is the negative image of a split ring resonator (SRR), which can provide a negative effective permittivity in the vicinity of its resonant frequency and produces sharp rejection stop band in cases of excitation with vertical electric fields. In this way,the novel FSS structure has high performance with one transport zero and perfect frequency selectivity.
