A metallic planar particle, which is called spiral ring resonator (SRR), is introduced in this article as a useful atom for artificial filter design and fabrication. A accurate equivalent circuit which provides the most relevant properties and parameters of the SRR is presented. The equivalent circut is validated by both electromagnetic simulation and experiments. Then we study the coupling effect between two SRRs and planar microwave filter using coupled microstrip SRR is proposed. At last the substrate integrated waveguide with complementary split ring resonators (CSRRs) etched on the waveguide surface is investigated in this article. The proposed structures allow the implementation of a forward wave passband propagating below the characteristic cutoff frequency of the waveguide. By changing the orientations of the CSRRs, which are incorporated in the waveguide surface and can be interpreted in terms of electric dipoles, varied passband characteristics are observed. Then we described and realized a novel guided-wave structure called half mode substrate integrated waveguide (HMSIW), which retains the attractive performances of substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) with a nearly half reduction in size compared to the original SIW version. We also design a two band bandpass filter by using different spiral ring resonators.
