Left-handed materials have been the hot research interests in the microwave community for the past years. Because of its unique characters, it has been actually a brand-new research topic. Among the plentiful of researches on LH materials, the complementary split ring resonators (CSRRs) have gained growing interest for their potential applications. CSRR is the negative image of a split ring resonator (SRR), which can provide a negative effective permittivity in the vicinity of its resonant frequency and produces sharp rejection stop band in cases of excitation with vertical electric fields. In this way, it can be used for the design and implementation of many novel microwave devices with special features. From the Maxwell Equations, the basic theoretical characteristics of LH materials have been analyzed. In succession, the rough equivalent circuits of SRR and CSRR structures are addressed and simple explanations have also been given to demonstrate the basic performances of CSRR structure.Substrate-integrated waveguide (SIW) is a novel transmission line proposed in recent years. It takes the advantages of rectangular waveguide and microstrip line, and has aroused a lot of attentions to its theoretical analyses and engineering applications. In this work, the compound application of CSRR and SIW have been considered and employed for the design of novel microwave device and subsystem, including a CSRR-SIW bandpass filter with high out-of-rejection and a novel frequency duplexer based on CSRR-SIW bandpass filter and SIW highpass filter. The measured results have demonstrated the validity of proposed design strategies, indicating the advantanges of the combination of CSRR and SIW. In the last chapter, the planar waveguide structure based on the combination of SIW and periodical corrugation with metamaterial characteristics is investigated. The combination of SIW and other structures are now expecting to development some novel devices and subsystems.
