MSC in Pool is a new architecture for Mobile switch core network. It is first proposed by3GPP organization. MSC in Pool overcomes the traditional strict hierarchy, which restricts theconnection of a RAN node to just one CN node. With MSC in Pool solution, a RAN node canbe connected to several CN nodes. From a RAN perspective, it can be served by a certaingroup of CN nodes. And a group of CN nodes means it can provide pool redundancy for theRAN node to prevent single core node failure. And the service provision by multiple CNnodes within a pool-area enlarges the served area compared to the service area of one CNnode. This results in reduced inter CN node updates, handovers and relocations and it reducesthe HLR update traffic. Also the Pool can balance the load between its members.A complete MSC in Pool solution should include MSC server and MGW in core networkpart, and BSC or RNC in radio assess network part. MSC in Pool solution can not only beimplemented on new installed nodes, but also on live nodes. To secure the smoothly networkevolution, in-depth analysis and investigation of MSC in Pool technology is needed,especially for those problems which pop up during the network change and may disturb traffic.This thesis analysises the first MSC pool in GD, and listes the problems occurred in the firstpractice, and give the remedy or solution. This thesis also analysises the performance of thenew network architecture, which proves the advantage of MSC in Pool solution. And alsogive some suggestion on new supervision system needed by this new network architecture.As new network architecture, MSC in Pool has a great improvement, but it still has somepotential risks which might cause network failure. This thesis also discusses such risk, andproposes preventive solution or emergency handling proposal to secure network utilizationand stability of this new architecture.
