The development of mobile communication techonology has brought great changes to the society and people’s liftstyle, especially in the recent20years, it experienced a rapid progress from1st generation (analog mobile)、2/2.5generation(GSM, GPRS) to current3rd generation(W-CDMA, CDMA2000, TD-SCDMA). With the fast worldwide growth in mobile communication subscribers, the security and capacity of telecommunication system became the big challenges. All the carriers and telecom device manufactures are always pursuing innovation to optimize the network capacity, security, performance and maintenance of telecom sytem.MSC POOL technology is based on3GPP TS23.236standard, it breaks the limitation of one-to-one controlling relationship between BSC/RNC and MSC, a number of MSCs are grouped together into a service pool, so that one BSC/RNC node could be connected to multiple MSC nodes. All the nodes of a domain in such a pool area share the responsibility to serve all the user equipments in the pool area, and each user equipment in the pool area may be served by any MSC of the pool. The solution could increase service availability, reduce signaling traffic in the core nodes and achieve load balancing.This paper analyzes MSC POOL technology and related business procedure based on3GPP specification and commercialization practice, and also verifies MSC POOL’S performance by experimental test. The main content is as following:The fundamentals of MSC POOL are introduced, which includes: load balancing, intra/inter pool switch and disaster recovery. Especially focused on load balancing algorithm of NNSF, NRI configuration, the relationship between NRI length and MSC POOL capacity. This paper provides several MSC POOL networking solutions available for different stages of MSC POOL evolution (such as’A’ interface over TDM or IP), defines the principles of MSC POOL configuration and construction.Core business process is introduced and analyzed. An optimized solution is disclosed in this paper on the basis of load reallocation theory to shorten the subscriber migration duration. Furthermore, this paper compares MSC POOL’S disaster recovery with Dual Homing mechanism, providing solution for recovering business from CN nodes failure.Finally, the performance of MSC POOL is verified by experimental case and engineering practice. The solution for reducing the difference between the theoretical value and experimental value is provided.
