Early radar systems utilize the delay time of echoes from targets to measure their range, while modern radar systems can carry out target imaging by making use of radar echo energy, and analyze more complex targets. Each kind of ground targets has their own features, which specifically modulate the radio signals from radar and make the echo signals time-variant. The time-varying process of echoes can be expressed by statistical model, whose parameters can be used as the eigenvalues of targets. In certain level of granularity or resolution, the eigenvalues of environmental targets on the ground make a matrix, which can be transformed into images. This kind of broadly-sensed images directly reflects the unseen characteristics of targets, and extends the cognitive ability of human being. which reflect the targets’essence from multiple aspects. Therefore, feature imaging is dramatically flexible and of great value. At first in this thesis, a measurement radar system with high precision is utilized to measure ground surface in some nearby area, and raw echo data at three different frequencies are acquired. The format of the record echo data is analyzed and a read module is designed to further process the data. Then, four statistical character parameters, namely RCS, Scattering Coefficient, Mean Echo Energy, and Energy Variance, are chosen to carry out imaging, and the fast extraction algorithms of these parameters are designed to get the statistical characteristic parameter matrix of surface echo signals. In the end, how to effectively transform the statistical characteristic parameters into images is studied and generated by visualizing parameter matrix are both kinds of True-Color and Pseudo-Color images of radar echo statistical characteristic parameter. In all, through in-depth study on a series of key techniques such as data acquisition, parameter selection, and feature extraction, ground surface imaging based on statistical feature extraction from radar echo signals is accomplished. The intuitionistic imaging results establish solid foundation for further research on target recognition and classification, and the thesis production is of considerable reference value to other related imaging research.
