Currently, the performance evaluation about wireless sensor network protocol is usually based on the simulation system or the custom-developed simulation program. And passive network monitoring systems are mostly designed for packet capturing and protocol parsing, which lack the function of protocol performance analysis. Based on those reasons, this paper focuses on passive monitoring system and protocol performance analysis in the real wireless sensor network, we make efficient use of the protocol packet information collected by passive monitoring tools so as to do a deep analyze of the protocol performance. Finally, this paper carries out a real-time WSN protocol performance evaluation method, which gets good practical value.In this paper, we first research the wireless sensor network protocol performance evaluation technologies, and analyze the advantages and disadvantages of the traditional protocol performance evaluation. Second, we design a solution of protocol performance evaluation based on passive monitoring. Finally, we develop a WSN protocol performance evaluation system called WSNPPA, and use this system to monitor the Collection Tree Protocol (CTP) which is implemented based on TinyOS and evaluate its performance. The main contributions of this paper include the followings:(1) We study the Collection Tree Protocol (CTP) which is realized based on TinyOS, and design protocol packets sniffer program based on TelosB wireless sensor module. According to properties of CTP, we propose the metrics for CTP protocol performance evaluation-DCHDCT.(2) We analyze and research the wireless sensor network passive monitoring technologies, and design a distributed multi-point monitoring strategy for the protocol data acquisition and improve the integrity of protocol data. We also analyze the relationship between the packets thoroughly based on the monitoring records. A finite state machine is constructed to realize the mathematical inference for CTP protocol performance evaluation. And we propose a micro active monitoring strategy for light load data acquisition, which is used to contrast with passive strategy.(3) We develop the protocol data monitoring tools, and implement the protocol performance evaluation system based on monitoring records called WSNPPA, which can monitor and analyze protocol performance in real-time, and realize the visual display of protocol performance and packet parsing. We use WSNPPA system in protocol monitoring and performance evaluation for CTP network, the experimental results indicate that the protocol performance evaluation method based on the passive monitoring in this paper have good performance.
