With the development of the computer network and wireless communicationtechnology, wireless local area network (WLAN) which could be seen as thecombination of these two technologies is more and more used in various fields. However, due to the openness of the transmission channel, WLAN faces moresecurity threats compared with wired networks. On the basis of that, the securityrequirements of the WLAN are huger than the wired networks. As we known, thedesign of the security mechanism for the WLAN still has a few of defects. So, thesecurity of the WLAN becomes a serious problem. Moreover, it has seriouslyhampered the development and further promotion of the WLAN. Therefore, theresearch of the security of the WLAN has great significance. In the paper, we firstly introduce the background of the WLAN, the researchstatus and the prevalent security issues. After that, taking the IEEE802.11protocol asa starting point, we analyze the service and protocol architecture of the IEEE802.11and the IEEE802.11b. We elaborate the principles and the vulnerabilities of the WEPprotocol. Then, we make a full discuss about the security issues which are existed inWLAN. We analyze the DoS (Denial of Service) which is the common methods toattack the WLAN, and summarize the means and methods of the DoS attacks. On thebasis of that, we introduce some improved WLAN protocols, such as WEP2, TKIP,WPA, and so on. We analyze the improvements of these improved protocolscompared with the conventional protocol. Finally, we make a detailed analysis on theauthentication protocol of the E-TLS, and improve the protocol with theconsideration of the existing problems.
