In this new era, Wireless LAN is one of the most promising technologies in the field of telecommunication. However, it should have more strict measures to communicate securely for its openness of wireless media. If security problems are not solved correctly, they will restrict the development of WLAN. Alas, as we can see from the current situation, security lags far behind application. But it is so new that few work on it. I descript 802.11b in several aspects, including access control, key management, data transfer. To fully understand it, I systematically studied 802.11 related standards, theory of applied cryptography and other protocols about network security. At the meantime, I put forward some viewpoints about it. Firstly I analyze the latest development about WLAN. Then introduce the work about studying and development in WLAN. The WLAN in this project is based on an IP Camera system. The security is strengthened through revising the WLAN. The improvements for the security of WLAN include the following two aspects: Firstly is the improvement for the AP. This is based on Linux and some of source codes which have existed. I study them and revise some of them and then build a suitable soft AP. Secondly is the wlan card driver development. This is base on Vxworks platform.
