The technology of the Wireless LAN has been well developed, and the application has been increasingly widespread in various fields. From emerging to mature, the WLAN has become the focuses of the major IT manufacturers. With the rapid growth of the WLAN, the security of the WLAN is increasingly concerned. In order to enhance the security of the WLAN, various security methods were developed. However, according the security capability and performance, these security methods have their advantage and suitable application range respectively. Therefore it is impossible for one security mechanism prevail over others, how to adapt to a variety of security mechanisms compatibly is the focus of this study. We do a depth study on the security in the WLAN, and based the various security access methods applied to WLAN, an approach for integrating WPA and WAPI was presented, which can make wireless terminals be able to access WLAN expediently. We firstly introduce the standards applied in the WLAN areas and discuss about the basis of technical and principles. Secondly we discuss the mechanism of the present security protocols. Then securities of these protocols are deeply analyzed, and based on the analysis the merit and flaws of these protocols are pointed out. With the rapid growth of the WLAN market, various security mechanisms will appear and coexist. Among these protocols WAPI and IEEE 802.11i are the two mainstream security protocols. In order to reduce the cost of upgrading and maintaining device, the existing IEEE802.11b device should not be completely eliminated, and therefore, through software method integrating the various security protocols into the existing device is a feasible solution. With the analysis of the requirement of security protocols integration, an approach which can integrate the IEEE802.11i and WAPI into the IEEE802.11b adapter is presented. With the related access information, this approach can recognize network type, and then adaptively choose corresponding protocol to access network. Finally, to verify the correctness of the algorithm, we design and realize a software system. Using the software system we do an experiment and the result show that the algorithm is correct and feasible.
