This dissertation used Nios II and Quartus II software produced by Altera, design and implement the handwriting Chinese character recognition system based on FPGA in EP2C35F672C6chip of cyclone II series implementation. The hardware part of recognition system based on FPGA is designed and implemented by the Quartus II software, and the software part of recognition system is to realize the recognition function of the system by the programming C++code in the Nios Ⅱ.This system writes variety of IP Core, including the preparation of the VGA, UART, and SDRAM, and then compiles the HDL files; realize data communication with FPGA and the handwriting or display equipment outside. The Quartus Ⅱ design software offers a complete and multiplatform design environment for SOPC, maximizes the implementation of integrated systems. A series of discrete coordinates be gained when moving the pad, the connection between the two adjacent is the smallest section of a straight line that FPGA can distinguish. Via the extraction of direction code, filtering and merging the sequence, the system can obtain the simplest direction sequences of this stroke, and then adopt the dynamic programming method to recognize this stroke according to stroke recognition dictionary. Matching the information of the strokes and the order with the information of Chinese characters in the dictionary, the system can achieve the recognition of Chinese characters. If identification fails, the system will learn Chinese characters on the basis of the instructions from user.The results of the experiment prove that the hardware part of the system is feasible and effective, can realize many functions, such as data communication between the FPGA and the peripheral equipment, and accomplish data collection, display and storage. The software part of the recognition system implements the recognition of the stroke, then achieves the characters recognition, and realizes the study and associate function. As embedded systems, the system has little influence on CPU speed, and easy to use. This system has a very high Cost-effective, can saving software and hardware resources, has good application prospects.
