JPEG2000is the latest still image compression standard released by ISO/IEC andITU joint technical committee (JTC) in2000. It adopts such core algorithms as DiscreteWavelet Transform (DWT) and Embedded Block Coding Optimized Truncation(EBCOT), and gets better quality for restored images on various compression ratiosthan the existing remote sensing image compression algorithms. Therefore, the study ofreliable image compression chip based on JPEG2000is of great practical significancefor our country’s aerospace career.This paper mainly studies the design of highly reliable VLSI for code streamorganization in JPEG2000algorithm. According to the compression chip’s requirementfor support of external SRAM, SDRAM and internal RAM, this paper proposes anddesigns a memory management unit named MMU, which can realize unifiedmanagement for the three storage modes. Due to the design, the internal storageredundancy of the chip can be fully used and the storage flexibility can also be achieved.For reliability requirements, on the one hand, the paper uses Hamming or TripleModular Redundancy protection for state machine, important logic and memory toimprove the chip’s ability against single upset events, on the other hand, considering thecharacteristics of image compression, an independent frame structure for streamorganization module is designed to make sure that error occurred in one frame will notinfluence the following frames and the chip can return to normal working statusautomatically in a short time in case SEU (single event upset) causes the interruption ofthe chip. Also some test and verification are conducted at BEE4platform and SEU(single event upset) experiment platform. The results show that the design targets aimedat function, resource, speed and reliability have been achieved.
