The proposed Femtocell technology can effectively solve the problems of indoorcoverage and low capacity in the cellular communication system. Besides, it can play acatalyst role for the integration of fixed and mobile networks. Studies on wireless usageshow that more than50percent of all voice calls and more than70percent of datatraffic originates indoors. Therefore, to improve indoor coverage and quality of service(QoS) is becoming more important. Femtocells, which operate in licensed spectrum, arelow-power and low-cost wireless access points comparing to similar businesses, and donot require changing the core network. The Femtocell architecture is much moredifferent than existing cellular networks. Thus this may create serious mutualinterference between Femtocells and Macrocell as well as among Femtocells, and themodifications of handover procedures and control algorithm are needed.First, the background of Femtocell, the concept of Femtocell, the meaning of itsresearch are analyzed, the development at home and abroad and the applicationscenarios are introduced. Then the composition and the network structure of Femtocellare discussed, meanwhile, the key issues in the Femtocell deployment and the impact onthe existing network are figured out. Second, this thesis analyzes the whole handoverprocess and the key steps, and presents modified signaling procedure of handover. Finally, handover control algorithms are presented to solve the frequent and unnecessaryhandover problem, which is a serious problem for Femtocell network deployment.Based on the Matlab modeling and simulation, the results show that the proposedalgorithm is an effective scheme to reduce the number of unnecessary handovers.
