In recent years, video compression technology has gained more and more concern in industry and academia. The H.264/AVC, released in2003, is the latest video compression standard. With its high compression ratio and good network adaptability, video compression technology based on H.264has become a hot topic.Based on the research of CABAC in H.264standard, we propose a full hardward implementation of a Context-based Adaptive Binary Arithmetic Encoder. This Encoder includes a14-way context pair generator composed of binarization and context modeling, a parallel in serial out module with clock cycle saving design, and a3-mode4-stage pipelined arithmetic encoder with carefully designed context update logic for eliminating data hazard. Based on the proposed architecture, the author proposes an even higher CABAC encoder architecture for further research.Our work is divided into two main steps. Step one to build the reference software model which achieves the functions specified in the H.264for generate test data for hardware design. Step two to complete the hardware design of the CABAC encoder using verilog. We test our encoder’s performance based on the data of different stream generated from the reference software model.According to the test results, our encoder could encode a1080p,30fps video in real time when running at70MHz.
