With more and more living and working pressure in modern society, more andmore people are in sub-health state, and people who contract high-risk diseaseand cardiovascular disease become younger and younger, leading to more andmore people are into the quasi-critically ill patients ranks, which has seriousimpact on people’s health and quality of life. More and more people go to thehospital for medical treatment also led to the current hospital overcrowding.Traditional diagnosis and guardianship mode on patient in hospital, i.e.face-to-face mode has been unable to meet people’s huge demand for healthcare, which gave enormous challenges to the health care industry. With the development of science and technology, real-time remotemedical monitoring system based on wireless sensor networks graduallyenteris the medical field. As a combination of sensor technology, electronicstechnology, wireless communication technology and network technology,real-time remote medical monitoring system can achieve real-time detectionof a variety of physiological parameters of the patient, which brings greatconvenience to the hospital medical staff on diagnosis of patient in anefficient and remote manner. With low-rate, low power consumption, flexiblenetworking modes and large network capacity, ZigBee technology is verysuitable for the application in wireless medical monitoring system. Threekinds of network topology, i.e. star topology, tree topology, and meshtopology are specified in ZigBee protocol. Tree network topology can achieveroute forwarding functions and is elatively simple, which makes it very suitable for the real-time, low-power remote wireless medical monitoringoccasions.Based on this, the design of ZigBee tree topology WSNs including theresearch and development of wireless sensor network node platform and theapplication in the real-time medical monitoring system are comprehensivelydiscussed. ZigBee tree wireless sensor network node are composed of thehardware platform based on32-bit high-performance ARM controllerLPC2136as well as ZigBee protocol compatible RF module CC2520plusCC2591, and software platform based on the embedded real-time operatingsystem μC/OS-II. The system μC/OS-II equipped with ZigBee protocol stackachived a variety of functions required by the real-time wireless medicalmonitoring. The ZigBee tree wireless sensor network platforms equipped withmultiple physiological parameters acquisition module and the remotecentralized control station, are very easy to apply in the hospital environmentto achieve real-time monitoring of the critically ill patients. The multiplephysiological parameters acquisition module integrates many sensors such asblood pressure sensors, oxygen saturation sensors, heart rate sensors, bodytemperature sensors and so on, can accurately measure patients’ physiologicalindicators. The centralized control station is responsible for managing theentire region and monitoring all patients’ data information, of which friendlyinterpersonal interface and intelligent database can provide great conveniencefor the operator. Wireless sensor network platform is mainly responsible forthe long-distance transmission of data information and realization of thepurpose of the remote medical monitoring, which reduces patients or themedical staff of the journey back and forth and improves the efficiency ofhospital work.In this paper, the ZigBee tree wireless sensor network node platformfully meets the needs of real-time monitoring of the patients in the hospital asthe project requires according to multipul test results such as communicationdistance test, data transceiver test and system power consumption tests. Theplatform designed has some versatility and can be used in industry, agriculture, environmental monitoring and many other fields when equipped withdifferent sensors.
