Metropolitan area network, as the foundation of telecommunicationnetwork, provides transmission channels and platforms for various businesses.With the continuous development of communication technology, thecommunication services of mobile service operators indicate a shift towardsIP, which causes a rapid growth of group data traffic transmitted by thenetwork. In addition to the traditional voice services, the telecom operators’businesses also include mass data services, after they got the full license fromthe government.The traditional SDH-based MSTP metropolitan area network find it hardto meet the transmission need of the fast-growing data services. Moreover, theSDH-based MSTP network, the Ethernet switches and the routers of mobileservice operators in our country, provide different services and getmaintenances respectively, which means multi-services cannot be provided inone network and the operation cost is extremely high. Therefore, themetropolitan area network needs to adopt a more flexible, more efficient andcheaper transmission platform to realize multi-services operation and networkintegration. The packet transport network (PTN) provides an option.China Mobile Group Shanghai Company Limited (CMSH) has made adecision and has already started the procedure to change its network from SDH-based MSTP to PTN. In this essay, the author analyzes the condition ofcurrent MSTP metropolitan area network of CMSH and discusses how toaccomplish the evolution from SDH-based MSTP to PTN. The author alsoputs forward the introduction of PTN technology and network constructionstrategies. The author of the essay designed a model for CMSH PTN-basedmetropolitan area network and used ZTE PTN optical network devices to testits performance in service carrying capacity, network protection, clocksynchronization, QoS, etc. The test showed expected results. It laid the firststone for the upcoming practical usage.
