Highly correlated with city development, sunlight, as a key indicator of amenity in city, has been becoming a hot scientific topic. To date, the research of sunlight concentrate on thedimension of human’s living environment. On the one hand, the sunlight Environment ofplanning building in winter was analyzed by quantitative simulation according to WinterSolstice or Under Solstitial Day, on the other hand, the sunlight in summer was calculated bythe shadow of length difference and azimuth error. However, most sunlight study and layoutdesign of buildings is based on how to overcome the lack of sunshine in winter, whilerelatively few literatures reported the research on outdoor sunlight condition in summer.Intensively crowded and mutually occupied, buildings in the city form the pattern ofvarious natural light environments and exert different influences on residents and plantations. In particular, the urban vegetation is an indispensable part for urban environment and itsgrowth and functions is dominated by sunlight. Therefore, this paper used the spatial variationof shadows and solar radiation to analyze the summer urban sunlight condition and tried toprovide rigid reference for urban green space planning. The main contents of this thesis are summarized as follows:(1) The thesis employed urban shadow to analyze the urban sunlight environments,“Shadow dead position” and “excessive light damage position” were defined according tourban shadow’s structural change, blocked range, blocked intensity and solar radiationposition.(2) Based on the algorithm of sunlight analysis of previous related research, andcombined with theoretical basis about winter sunlight analysis, the paper introduced twoconcepts”shadow area accumulation about time” and “shadow Intensity”.By studying theexperimental regions, the paper applied the methodologies to urban green space systemplanning and provided the suggestions on how to layout green space reasonable aroundbuildings and choose plant species.(3) The paper demonstrated that shows that it is applicable and scientifically soundingmethod to study on the urban sunlight environment in summer by using the urban shadow andthe spatial variation of solar radiation. In addition, urban vegetation designers can take theanalysis of sunlight variation and also effectively circumvent the “shadow dead position” and“excessive light’s damaging position” of plant growth. Conclusively, results of the paper areproven to be of great scientific and practical significance in urban green space systemplanning design.
