Various advantages can be expected when using Light Emitting Diode(LED) asthe light source to build up the illumination system: saving energy, lower pollution,miniature, and longer lifetime. The existing LED can not be directly applied to theillumination system because of the factors of the optical power the luminancedistribution, and the traditional distribution methods are no longer applying withLED light source, so a special optical design should be done according to theillumination requirement. Therefore,the research on the optical design method forLED illumination system has great significance. Besides, LED illumination systemis meeting another problem, the heat dissipation. LED cannot work properly if theheat has not been dissipated timely. This paper mainly did an exploratory researchon optical design and heat dissipation of LED illumination system, the rasults weresummarized as follows:1. Studied the optical, electric and thermal characteristics of LED, and LED’sdriver and dimming technology.2. The optical model of LED was created with the optical modeling software,and summed up the affection of lens refractive index, lens radius and reflectorbowl’s cone angle to the optical model.3. On the basis of non-imaging optical, the differential equations of freeformwas derived with the law of refraction and the law of energy conservation,established a solid model by using numerical soluton.4. Analyzed the influence of the junction temperature to the performance ofLED. Discussed several ways of heat dissipation of LED, and designed anexperiment to analyze and compared semiconductor refrigeration’s cooling effect tocompressor’s.
