Harmonic pollution and reactive power consumption have become important factors to influence the power quality. Active power filter is regarded as the most efficient method to carry out harmonic suppression and reactive power compensation. The part of harmonic detection plays an important role because it is related to the compensation effect of the active power filter. Detection and compensation of harmonics and reactive currents are emphasized in this paper. Simulation and experiment are carried out and good results are obtained. The generation and hazards and main control measures of harmonics are first introduced in this paper which leads to the concept of active power filter. Then classification, topology as well as advantages and disadvantages of the active power filter are analyzed in detailed. the researches on the main circuit structure of the single-phase active power filter are conducted in depth which conclude elaboration of its working principle, mathematical modeling and establishment of formulas to get values of the AC side inductance, the DC voltage and the capacitance.Several harmonic detection methods which have high feasibility are summarized in this paper. Finally, the harmonic and reactive current detection method based on single-phase instantaneous reactive power is selected. At the same time, processes of theoretical derivation and the detection diagram of the system are given in detailed. Compared to other methods, this method has many advantages, such as simplified circuit structure, small amount of calculation, easier implementation and good application to both single-phase and three-phase circuit.MATLAB is used to carry out simulation on this detection method. A test platform is built by using the Texas instrument-64-bit fixed-point digital signal processor chip TMS320F2812DSP. Experimental results show that the single-phase active power filter can effectively compensate harmonics and reactive currents and further demonstrate that the real-time, stability and reliability of this method are fully in accordance with the compensation performance of the single-phase active power filter. So the study on this method has certain significance.
