Traditional telecom services and business models have been unable to reverse the declining trend, and transformation has become an inevitable choice. With the sharp rise in copper prices, continue to use the copper raw material to increase bandwidth costs too high, while the price of fiber optic cable and optical transceiver modules gradually reduce; Common Internet business including the future of IPTV all put forward the new bandwidth requirements. So it is important to increase the bandwidth. Meanwhile, business integration, including broadband Internet access, VOIP and other services promote fiber to become inevitable.Optical fiber instead of copper is a project which is proposed by China’s fixed-line operators China Telecom and China Netcom to achieve optical access gradually. The ADSL access network which has been used by China’s fixed-line operators usually take the way of concentrating central office, that means users’ ADSLMODEM need to use synchronous signal with ADSL central office equipment of telecommunications branch. This distance is generally more than3km. So distance has become the biggest problem to block the speed increase of ADSL technology. Therefore, the strategy of Optical fiber instead of copper is to combine the FTTx technology with ADSL technology, and cut down this copper’s distance between users’ house and ADSL central office equipment (DSLAM) to increase bandwidth access. In this paper, it first introduced the background of "optical fiber instead of copper", and expounded the necessity of network transformation and optical fiber instead of copper. Then analyze the present network situation of Heze Unicom.
