The WSN consists of lots of miner sensor nodes which are cheap and capable to communicate and compute. These nodes can form a smart and self-organized network for measuring and controlling. WSN includes comprehensive technologies such as wireless communication, embedded technology and sensing. As the developing of WSN, its practical value in military, agriculture, industry and environmental gradually becomes more and more important.ARQ scheme has been widely used in promoting the reliability in data communication especially in the wired network and WLAN. However, the current protocols can’t satisfy the special characteristics of WSN. It’s essential to design a practically simple and reliable communication protocol for WSN.This paper introduces the practical value and current research of this area. Then the ARQ scheme used in the WSN is presented. Finally, we illustrate a novel SW-ODMA-ARQ. In summary, the contributions of this paper are summarized as follows:1. In this paper, we present the analytical methodology that characterizes the trade-off between energy consumption and source-to-sink statistical reliability. Based on the requirements of reliability and energy consumption of the nodes, we propose an analytical methodology to meet the specific requirements of lifetime and reliability in WSNs.2. The optimal algorithm, which selects the transmission range to maximize the longevity of the network is given.3. A novel and simple scheme named SW-ODMA (send wait one data multiple ACK) is given. The arrival rate of ACK increases with the number of retransmission persistence. In this way, the energy consumed by transmission of data packet can be saved by transmitting more but less energy consumption of ACKs, the objective of reduction of energy consumption and the longevity can be achieved. This paper also analyzes the deployment conditions of SW-ODMA, and evaluates the performance by simulation experiments.
