Wireless sensor networks, which combines sensor technology and wireless networkcommunication technology together, is widely used in the areas, such as environmentalmonitoring, city management, military and national defense, emergency disaster relief anddangerous zone remote control etc. However, the development of wireless sensor networks islimited by node energy constrained and zone hard to maintain. Therefore, rational use ofenergy to extend the network lifetime becomes one of the key technologies of wireless sensornetworks.The protocol of wireless sensor networks is analyzed in this article, summarizing theexisting hierarchical energy-saving optimization algorithms on physical layer, data link layerand network layer. The analysis indicates the optimization of network performance can berealized by the design of cross-layer optimization via information sharing between differentlayers. Therefore, in this article, base on JRMLOSNEC optimization algorithm andCDLMIWSN optimization algorithm, the developed cross-layer optimization algorithm withlargest lifetime is approved in this article. On physical layer, the M-ary modulation order M isused as parameter of cross-layer optimization to set up the relationship model between datatransfer time, launching rate and modulation order. The optimization modulation order M isobtained from simulation at the point of largest network lifetime. On network layer, the noderesidual energy and distance factor are introduced as the parameters of cross-layeroptimization. Furthermore, the LEACH clustering routing protocol replaces the plan routingprotocol used in the traditional algorithm. Through analyzing the amount of optimizationcluster heads, and choosing the best cluster head and route between clusters, a developedalgorithm extending wireless sensor network lifetime is designed. The simulation resultexplores that this algorithm can extend wireless sensor networks lifetime about30%longer than LEACH routing algorithm and about20%longer than CDLMIWSN algorithm.Meanwhile, it can also improve the efficiency and stability.
